Fate dealt me the ace of diamonds once
And I lost it for
My father's mind had wandered and
I knew what would be dealt me next:
A hand of nothing
A cup of tea with biscuits
Warm carpet lounges &
The care of brisk women whose names
Would be the last I would try to learn
In a little room they would tell me was mine
But I'll know it never was.
And for this I shall be thankful
Yet for the ace of diamonds?
I'll hold that card
Until my end.
