translated by Catherine Hales

the song of the black letter

under the mildew spot a dragonfly's wing and
around the thread binding a spot of midge's
blood .. lord greystoke junior enters the strange
cottage scratches his nearly hairless chest
wood of the veranda creaking at every step
feels the linen or leather things and I I'm all
excited too in every fibre of my being white
as coconut milk this unknown thing is thinner
than palm leaves smooth as ivory and so many
black beetles moving on it but when he stays
still he notices that no there's not a hint not a
single stir of movement that must be the
vacillating air here in the tropics he thinks of
fever stiffness rigor mortis and sees where
initial patterns begin to form among the beetles
a similarity where the feelers wing-cases legs are
repeating is there not something already beginning
to murmur unobtrusively there lord greystoke
junior forgets the time and as he's still staring
at the beetles he hears the sounds of a strange
species his brothers and sisters cannot hear in the
tangle dark and hairy so is it his ears or my ears
in which something is singing as though of its
own accord and the compost is a termite hill and
every tossing piece of washing line the liana from
which a cry forces its way through every single
window blind into a locked and bolted apartment
