We eat the reunion dinner under the table. “It works better that way,” Lucy explains, “you don’t get so sad when the moon comes up and the day is over.”

I drop a green olive and it rolls to Lucy’s feet. It looks like a tiny mournful moon.

“You ruin everything,” she says.
