by closing their operculum (trap door) to the outside.

 not seeing
  the sea
   in over a year's
    what cartoonifies
     you   perched
    then lost
   reflected in
  the tilde of surf
   a strew of
     history expressed
         as notes
             they wriggle free
                  invade unrolling beach
                the trumpet squeak
             of bivalve turn
           beneath a thinning
         simple gash
   of sun
